Start CPR
check for breathing
check for circulation
start chest compressions
shout to the casualty "OPEN YOUR EYES"
look around for danger, if need be deal with danger not CPR
During CPR you notice that your colleague has given several rescue breaths but the casualty's chest did not rise or move in any way. You then:
note this down in your pocket note book, noting the time and place
radio this into the control room so the ambulance can be notified of this
ask your colleague to allow you a try and then you tilt the head back lifting the chin up to open the airway fully
ask your colleague to allow you a try but stick to chest compressions only
there are 2 casualties unconscious - neither are breathing, neither are responding, 1 is a child, 1 is an adult. 2 HATOs attend the scene
1 HATO should immediately apply 5 rescue breaths to the child and 1 HATO should immediately apply 30 chest compressions to the adult
1 HATO should immediately apply 30 chest compressions to the child and 1 HATO should immediately apply 5 rescue breaths to the adult
1 HATO should immediately apply 30 rescue breaths to the child and 1 HATO should immediately apply 30 chest compressions to the adult
1 HATO should immediately apply 5 rescue breaths to the child and 1 HATO should immediately apply 5 rescue breaths to the adult
You are called to a collapsed female. During your primary survey you discover that she is breathing normally
now get her up and about - this is very important
now do a secondary survey, she may have an injury
now place her in the recovery position and monitor breathing
now start CPR
You are called to a collapsed male who's breathing is irregular
start chest compressions and continue until an ambulance arrives, rescue breaths are not yet required
apply chest compressions and rescue breaths in a ratio of 2 compressions to 30 breaths
apply chest compressions and rescue breaths in a ratio of 15 compressions to 2 breaths
apply chest compressions and rescue breaths in a ratio of 2 compressions to 15 breaths
A man aged about 30 has collapsed and is neither breathing nor responding
apply chest compressions and rescue breaths in a ratio of 30 compressions to 2 breaths
apply chest compressions and rescue breaths in a ratio of 2 compressions to 30 breaths
apply chest compressions and rescue breaths in a ratio of 15 compressions to 2 breaths
apply chest compressions and rescue breaths in a ratio of 2 compressions to 15 breaths
On motorway patrol you are called to an adjacent lake where a child has drowned. The child is on the bank not breathing and unresponsive
start with 5 rescue breaths
start with 30 chest compressions
start with 15 chest compressions
start with 15 rescue breaths
The safety of both the rescuer and victim are paramount during resuscitation (CPR). Isolated reports of transmission of infection HAVE been reported but have NEVER YET INCLUDED transmission of
HIV
tuberculosis
severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (SARS)
bacteria

A woman has collapsed in the motorway services unconscious and unresponsive and not breathing at all. Members of the public begin crowding round but don't know what to do. A supermarket manager rushes over and hands you a defibrillator but returns straight away to his store. You would now
resuscitate the woman, removal of her upper clothing would not be necessary
resuscitate the woman, removal of her upper clothing would be necessary
wait for an ambulance before commencing CPR
keep the crowd back and reassure the woman as much as possible
you are called to a slip road where 10 people waiting by a broken down bus have been run over by a swerving lorry. Which casualty should be assessed first?
the casualty who is silent and not moving
the casualty who is bleeding severely
the casualty who is elderly
the casualty who has obviously broken limbs
You are called to a collapsed female in the motorway services. A passerby tells you "LOOK, she was stabbed, I got the knife out alright though" and passes you a knife covered in blood. The casualty is still breathing normally at this stage, you must now:
find and seal the wound(s)
get her into the recovery position
apply chest compressions
get her name and address for next of kin reasons
get the name and address of the passerby
You are called to a person stabbed in the motorway services. The knife is still in the person's upper chest. You manage to stem the flow of blood and seal the wound. Your secondary survey reveals no other injuries. You should now:
sit the casualty in the W position (sat up back supported and support under the knees) leaning towards the injured side
place the casualty in the recovery position
remove the knife
get the casualty's name and address
You are with another HATO who has applied dressings onto a badly lacerated arm. Blood has soaked through the first dressing and your colleague has applied a second dressing over the top of the first. Blood has soaked through the second dressing now.
take both dressings off and reapply a fresh one
apply a third dressing over the other two
do not apply any further dressings
get two further dressings and apply the third and fourth dressings over the top of the first and second
You are called to a nearby services fast food restaurant where a 15 year old child has been badly scalded in the back, her leg is VERY RED. You should take charge of the child and while awaiting ambulance:
pour running cold water over the affected area for 10 minutes
cover the leg in cling film
bandage the leg
reassure the child
2 boys have broken into a motorway maintenance shed and have burned hands from liquid chemicals they disturbed in the maintenance shed. You should get their hands:
under running cold water for 20 minutes
under running cold water for 10 minutes
under running cold water for 15 minutes
covered from the air by bandaging or cling film
treated with antiseptic cream or spray
You are called to a male who has collapsed in the motorway services. Upon searching the male you find he has INSULIN and realise he is DIABETIC. Just at that moment the male comes round saying "My INSULIN! My INSULIN!" You should
administer him with the insulin you found
administer him with neat sugar (that you have in sachets in your jacket pocket that you keep for your tea)
standby until arrival of the ambulance crew
take his name and address and get onto control to confirm whether he is diabetic or not
You are called to a raging swollen fast river where a male has fallen in. A foot bridge further down is the perfect place to rescue him. You should:
jump off the bridge and swim to him
throw a rope to him from the river bank
jump into the river near the bridge but from the water's edge not the bridge itself and swim out to the male
ask others passing by if they can swim and are willing to swim out to the male while you coordinate the rescue
throw a rope to him from the bridge
You are called to a male having an epileptic fit. He is thrashing about and biting his tongue causing blood to flow from his mouth. You should:
grab the male and using anything to hand such as a metal or wooden spoon, prise this into his mouth to prevent further biting of the tongue
grab the male and keep him still up against a wall
get the male up and about and walking round, this is very important
keep people back and just cushion his head with somebody's coat and maybe wipe the blood from his mouth

Sit the casualty down, head forward, pinch the nose below the bridge for 10 minutes
Sit the casualty down head back against a wall or fixed object and ask casualty to sniff hard
You are called to a large 20 stone male who has collapsed on the toilet. You attend and find that he is not responding and is not breathing. The HATO with you says "Come on, we must get him off the toilet and out of the cubicle to begin CPR"
Together with the other HATO you must move him off the toilet and out of the cubicle
Any attempt to move such a large man could result in him falling over and banging his head incurring serious injuries, so we would wait for the ambulance
CPR can be applied on the man as he is now, so we would begin rescue breaths in the cubicle
Lifting such a huge man is too hazardous for HATOs, for this reason we would await the ambulance before taking further action
Defibrillation
stops the heart
starts the heart
bypasses the heart
reinforces the heart
You can defibrillate a casualty with a
pacemaker
weather condition consisting of rain
metal nipple ring

You and another HATO in a 4 x 4 are hailed. You stop and see an unconscious woman, who is neither responding nor breathing. Your colleague brings a defibrillator from the 4 x 4 and sets it up. While your colleague sets up the defibrillator and attaches the shock pads you
continue/ start CPR
keep the crowd back
notify control to inform the ambulance that a defibrillator is being set up
monitor and note down exactly what your colleague is doing
A defibrillator issued for use of HATOs / the public/ will deliver a shock of high voltage to a person who's heart is in a state of
