Bravo! About time they axed this.. A large percentage of motorists don't have DAB in their vehicles (unless you're a high ranking HA official).

To ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of what savings to public expenditure would be made by abolishing the Highways Agency's Traffic Officer Service, after allocating to the police as much of that saving as would be necessary to fulfil the Traffic Officer Service's present responsibilities.[HL4566]
Earl Attlee wrote:: We have made no assessment of abolishing the Traffic Officer Service as there is currently no intention to transfer their responsibilities back to the police.

HIGHWAYS AGENCY FEARS JOB CUTS.
30 June, 1994

Trade unions at the Highways Agency fear that nearly a third of its 2,400 staff could lose their jobs in a shake-up by chief executive Lawrie Haynes. He is expected to announce plans for the agency's future within three weeks. One source said: 'If the job cuts are drastic the unions would not rule out industrial action.'The agency took over responsibility for trunk road construction and repair from the Department of Transport on April 1.At the same time, transport secretary John MacGregor cut the roads programme under financial and public pressure.Unions believe Mr Haynes wants to scrap the agency's regional structure, and centralise its operations, probably in Milton Keynes. And they fear they will be consulted only once these plans are too far advanced to be changed. One union official said: 'We need to have staff based where the work is done, so they are in contact with the public who will be served by new roads.'A spokesman for the Highways Agency said talk of job losses was 'just speculation'. 10 year plan? Don't give them the idea we actually think they have a plan.
