potholes

MORE CASH GOES ON PAYOUTS FOR POTHOLES THAN FIXING THE ROADS
A shortfall of funding means councils are now forced to splash out more money compensating motorists than they spend repairing our streets.
DAILY EXPRESS 15.5.09
Local authorities in England and Wales paid £53million in compensation to motorists affected by potholed roads last year but spent £700,000 less fixing problems.

The payouts could have repaired more than one quarter of the 3.5million holes, the Local Government Association said.

It blamed “no-win no-fee” lawyers for a rise in claims which are hitting fragile council budgets.

But motoring groups said Labour’s poor record on road funding had led to a deterioration in the country’s highways. And it adds further weight to the Daily Express crusade to Get Britain Moving.

Last month the Asphalt Industry Alliance revealed that the number of potholes soared 32 per cent last year – and that was before the cold winter brought more damage.

It estimated that there is a pothole every 120 yards and that the backlog needed to carry out repairs is £8.5billion.

LGA Transport spokesman Councillor David Sparks said: “The spiralling cost of maintaining our roads is totally out of proportion to the ability of local authorities to pay for it.

“Councils have consistently argued for greater investment to stop our roads from deteriorating to such an extent.

“The situation is being made even worse by no win, no fee lawyers who are eating up almost half the road maintenance budget.

“In the absence of enough public money to invest, the Government should tighten the law to stop the system being clogged up with claims from people just chancing their arm. It’s nothing short of madness that councils have to pay out so much in compensation when this could actually be spent filling in potholes.

Theresa Villiers, Shadow Transport Secretary, said: “Labour have run our roads down into the ground.

“They have soaked the motorist for more and more taxes while entirely failing to understand the gravity of the problem caused by the lengthening backlog of road maintenance.

“The compensation culture, that has grown so much worse under Labour is making a difficult job for councils even harder.”

Tim Green, Director of the Road Users’ Alliance said: “This is symptomatic of the safety implications that result from lack of investment in roads.

“Tackling claims is not the answer, the Government should be tackling its poor record on road funding and improve the major road network as well as the condition of local roads, to correct bad road design and help reduce accidents overall.”

Mrs Jezza managed to knacker a wheel when a pot hole jumped out at her and after we reported it, the council had the area resurfaced before we could get back to the site to get some photo's to assist with a claim.

Part of the nearest main road is so bad, you can't actually see the original surface anymore, there's just loads of temporary repairs. Problem is, no one from the local council lives round here, so we get stuck with poor roads and no resurfacing :slr: :slr: :slr:

At the moment things seem to be bearing up quite well, I guess it helps when the temperature stays down as you dont get thaw and then freeze over and over again. We will se how it goes in the coming weeks.

Oh C'mon TM1 you know as well as I do, My region has that much dead wood in the back office, we could fill a small rivene in Outer Mongolia let alone a pothole in lane 1. :sleye:

What you must remember DRA King is that dead wood just rots away to nothing, and then you find yourself left with a hole. :slzi:
